29 Years of HOPE: Help Options Protection Empowerment
Alternative To Family Violence celebrated their 29th Anniversary Ceremony on Thursday, September 20, 2007. Started by a small group of Adams County citizens 30 years ago, Alternatives To Family Violence has been the only nonprofit organization dedicated to offering women and children living in abusive homes safe shelter, counseling, intervention and support since 1978. Today, Alternatives To Family Violence serves over 6,000 people each year through Safehouse Services and the Community Outreach & Support Program.
The emergency Safehouse, located at a confidential address, offers over 4,000 nights of shelter to 300 women and children each year. Advocates at Safehouse also answer two 24-hour crisis lines, with one dedicated for monolingual Spanish speaking victims of violence. Advocates provide around the clock support to women and children through individual and group counseling, education, information and ongoing support. Alternatives To Family Violence is able to offer limited financial assistance and provides referrals and advocacy to help families find the tools to build safe and stable homes. A specialized Children’s Program insures that the youngest victims receive the highest quality of services.
The Community Outreach & Support Program also offers counseling, support and advocacy to over 300 women, adolescents, children, and men in individual and group settings each year. These services are offered at 3 convenient locations as well as on site at other service organizations. Staff provides education to the community at large through presentations at service group meetings and community fairs, as well as training and technical assistance to other nonprofits and local law enforcement victim assistance volunteers and staff.
This past year’s anniversary event “Honoring 29 Years of HOPE” raised over $9,000 in much needed funding to support these programs. Thank you so much to everyone who attended and support Alternatives To Family Violence throughout the year. Only as a community can we meet our mission “to provide H. O.P. E.—Help, Options, Protection & Empowerment—to those, subjected to violence and oppression, while promoting nonviolence as a social value.”
